| The Circus Comes to Town (Anaheim
2011) |

Last Tuesday, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train
crossed over the Tehachapi Mountains. I've seen this train a few times
in the past, but always at dusk and never anywhere particularly scenic,
so I decided to take a day off and head up to Tehachapi with my brother
to catch it. The train was due to depart Fresno early in the morning, so
we headed to Sandcut to start our day. While there, we shot a number of
eastbounds (southbound on the Union Pacific): BNSF-01 |

BNSF-02 |

Finally, several hours late, the Circus train arrived. By
now, of course, the sun had shifted more than we liked. |

We headed up the grade to catch the train at Tunnel 2, between Caliente
and Bealville, as the sun was better at this location now - Picture 1 |

Continuing up the hill, we heard the dispatcher setting up a meet at
Woodford. Unfortunately, the westbound was on the sunny side, so we
continued up the hill. Even though the Loop itself was a morning shot,
we still stopped there to watch this mile-long train loop over itself -
and then some. |

We figured out last shot would be at the classic signal bridge just
north of Mojave. (These signals are not long for this world, as the UP's
Mojave Sub is due to receive new signals very soon. A few were already
in place, but not yet operational.) While we were waiting, this two-car
passenger train surprised us. |

Then the Circus train appeared shortly after. We decided to grab one
last shot at the south end of Mojave, where the BNSF line diverges from
the UP's trackage to head to Barstow (where the animals would be watered
before the train headed south again over Cajon Pass and on to San
Diego): |

Today (July 24th), the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus moved
most of their cars to Anaheim (the animal cars and flats will move later
this evening). Mid-day in July isn't an ideal time to shoot, but
fortunately the street running they would be encountering run both
east-west (Santa Ana Street) and also north-south (Olive Street). So,
figuring the light would be best on Olive, I headed over there to catch
the train. |

Hot on the heals of this train were the switchers that would assist with
placing these cars on the appropriate tracks at South Anaheim, just
north of Katella Avenue. |

Pipes Snake into the Canyon

Four GP60M's at Belin, NM on 8/4/07 - submitted by Brian Kreimendahl
Athearn has recently released the EMD GP40X
locomotives in HO scale. The UP history of these locos has seen them in several
different number series and paint variations over time. The six units were
initially received as 9000 - 9005 between December 1977 and March 1978. They
were renumbered the first time to 90 - 95 between May & June 1985. They were
renumbered again to 954 - 959 between January and September 1989. They were
schedule to be renumbered again to 5500 - 5505. Only one unit made it - 958 to
5504 in November 1997. Up inherited one unit from SP (7231) - but that's another
story. Below are some pictures along the way.

The first UP "GREEN (Yellow?) GOAT" waits for
departure after it's test in Roseville.
Union Pacific's paint scheme hasn't changed much since 1940. The most recent
being the lightning stripe scheme "borrowed" from the C&NW. The next change will
be the lower frame sill stripe that will be changed from red to a yellow
reflective stripe to comply with the Fed regulations. UP has until May 31st 2015
to outfit the fleet. This is what it will be like.
Update on the Yellow Stripe from UP on
4/26/05
Well, as you know we didn't do it because
we wanted a change. We did in fact consider a lot of alternatives to try to
maintain a red stripe, but the sill is only wide enough for the required FRA
stripe. There's no room for a stripe above the yellow and there were no other
designs with wider/added red stripes that improved our basic paint scheme There
are a lot of sad faces around here about having to change our paint scheme since
we're one of the only railroads to have been consistent for so many years.
So now you know the details.
